Hopefully we all have some sort of relationship with the Creator of Heaven and Earth.

Do we view God as some sort of “slot machine” where we throw up a prayer, pull down the handle, and expect an immediate answer… an answer that meets with our approval? It can get to that point for some of us. But before we can get to the point where praying is meaningful and our prayers get answers, I think it is important to know whom we are praying to.

There have been many gods in this old world of ours – dating back thousands of years. Gods of war and peace, virginity and sacrifice, weather and other ideologies. But all these are pale in comparison to the one true God, the creator of heaven and earth. He has many names – when praying we should address Him by His Name, how else is He gonna know who you are talking to? Of course he does, because He is God – but calling someone by their name brings a sense of “knowing that person” a sense of understanding that person, and a sense of being a friend to that person.

So here is a partial list of names that Yahweh (YHWH) our Father in heaven is known by. Maybe one will become familiar to you and when you pray – address Him in that manner. Thank you Brother Carey Schloemer for the list of names you have shared.

Adonai-Jehovah — The Lord our Sovereign
El-Elyon — The Lord Most High
El-Olam — The Everlasting God
El-Shaddai — The God Who is Sufficient for the Needs of His People
Jehovah-Elohim — The Eternal Creator
Jehovah-Jireh — The Lord our Provider
Jehovah-Nissi — The Lord our Banner
Jehovah-Ropheka — The Lord our Healer
Jehovah-Shalom — The Lord our Peace
Jehovah-Tsidkenu — The Lord our Righteousness
Jehovah-Mekaddishkem – The Lord our Sanctifier
Jehovah-Sabaoth — The Lord of Hosts
Jehovah-Shammah — The Lord is Present
Jehovah-Rohi — The Lord our Shepherd
Jehovah-Hoseenu — The Lord our Maker
Jehovah-Eloheenu — The Lord our God

Now that we’ve all met, perhaps we can feel comfortable when praying to our Creator, Yahweh. But that is not enough. As you become stronger in your faith, you will find that “listening” and what you don’t say is more important that what you pray for. That quiet time in prayer is when God’s Holy Spirit can communicate with you. Let your mind be relaxed and be in a silent – quiet surrounding so you can hear that small, still voice that belongs to the all-knowing God of the universe – Jehovah. Try it – I promise quality time will yeild quality results.
